Where are the Clowns?

If this 4-1/2 minute video doesn't make you tear up thinking of all we have lost (and are in the process of losing still) I don't know what will.

I hope my kids will some day discover that there was a time in America when funny men and women could make us laugh at ourselves, our politicians and even our culture without anyone seriously taking offense. Perhaps they will learn that if a society must curtail its speech for fear of offending anyone, it will ultimately offend everyone.

Enjoy this piece of nostalgia, and note Orson Welles' prophetic lament at the end. Unfortunately the clowns in the video are amateurs compared to the ones running our government (and soon our lives.)

I know you love the past, that is why you chose to live there. And yes, the pioneers of radio and TV were great! It's quite nostalgic for old people to look at those images and think wistfully of their long past youth, but hey, it's 2009. It's a whole new world.

I suppose you don't stay up late enough to see that sketch comedy lives, or get out to the comedy clubs that thrive in almost every city, but let me assure you that comedy lives. Do you know nothing of Tracy Ullman, Russell Brandt, or Jeff Dunham? (with Achmed the Dead Terrorist www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go )
You need to get out more.

As to clowns in government, where were You during the last 8 years when the cowboy clowns
expected the rodeo bulls to manage themselves in an orderly market free from interference?

The government should be running your life if you are writing credit default swaps with nothing to pay for them when they head south. Or if you bet your bank on sub-prime loans you knew couldn't perform.

I don't mind clowns so much; it's the selfish, greedy vultures that got us in this mess that I don't like.
